“Non-destructive portable measuring device saves on fruit waste while increasing efficiency”

The South Korean portable measuring device provider Sunforest worked with Zespri to test the attributes of kiwi fruit in their orchards in New Zealand.

Sunforest is a South Korean provider of innovative portable NIR Spectrometers that measure fruit attributes in a non-destructive manner. “Using a Sunforest device, growers can gather accurate information about fruit sweetness, dry matter, and internal defects while the fruit is still hanging on the tree. To a large extent, it saves product loss and provides a high working efficiency,” the general manager Mr Jay Hwang explained.

Developed in collaboration with kiwifruit experts in New Zealand, H-100C has been commercially released for growers in time for this year season.  Non-destructive fruit testing to measure Dry Matter of kiwifruit provides growers to understand fruit has reached its optimum maturity before picking.

“In addition, horticulture laboratory Eurofins used our Sunforest H-100C spectrometer to carry out a non-destructive maturity monitoring assessment of avocados in New Zealand throughout the season. They assessed over 3000 avocados through both the non-destructive Sunforest H-100C measurement as well as the destructive dehydration of a disc of fruit flesh in this evaluation. Eurofins reported that the Sunforest H-100C was proved to be able to reliably track changes in the same fruit over time through non-destructive monitoring of avocado fruit in the orchard. This capability could enable the industry to implement a dry matter monitoring program that helps growers and industry representatives of service providers track the progression of dry matter in the orchard throughout the season.”

There are some similar types of quality meters in the market. When asked about the competitive advantage of Sunforest products, Jay explains: “Accuracy is our key focus. Aside from the hardware of the machine itself, we have a model building service that guarantees a high level of accuracy. The standard model is created by testing a large volume of fruit over the years. Besides, we provide model building/updating service to the client based on test data given from the client’s end.

“Clients can gather fruit attribute data from our Fruits Cultivating Information Server (FCIS) system. This is an integrated data management server and centralizes crop harvest data from growers and provides relevant info to clients. Measured data is exported to FCIS home page through PC or smartphone, and systemically organized in accordance with the date of measurement, fruit quality and attributes i.e. Brix, dry matter, color, etc.” Jay explains. “Take our client Bayer as an example, who is using the Sunforest H-100C instrument to measure the moisture of corns. Meter reading data is transferred to Monsanto App and uploaded to their data server on cloud.”

Aside from that, growers can also use the device to create a ‘fruit attributes path map’ for whole orchards. “Growers can install GPS-it’s mobile App (www.landkind.com) on their phone. Our measuring device interfaces with this App via Bluetooth. When moving from one tree to another, fruit attributes are integrated with their GPS locations. Thus an orchard map can be generated, showing the DM and Brix dots along the path of samplings. But at the moment, this service is only available for kiwifruit and avocado growers in New Zealand,” Jay explained.

Over the years, Sunforest has been dedicated to innovating new models and increasing testing accuracy. “We developed several models and commercialized applications for various fruits and crops like apple, pear, peach, persimmon, melon, mandarin, citrus, grape, corn, kiwifruit, avocado, mango, and more products are under development.” Jay said. “At the moment, we are supplying devices to more than 20 countries. With the growing demand from overseas markets, our project volume doubles every year.”
