A video has emerged claiming to show the 'correct' way to open a mango with one slice of a knife.

While most people cut open the fruit by slicing parallel on either side of the seed,  Twitter user 'The Chi' said anyone who does so has been 'eating mangoes all wrong'.

'The Chi' said we should instead be cutting around the centre of the mango before twisting the top and bottom sections free from the seed.

The woman, from Zimbabwe, suggested we then use each end as makeshift bowls and eat the fruit with a spoon.

Ta-da! A Twitter user has alerted everyone to a new way of cutting up a mango, and it involves slicing around the seed (pictured)

According to the video we should be cutting around the centre of the mango, twisting the top and bottom sections free from the seed, and then using them as makeshift bowls to eat the fruit with a spoon

1. Choose a fully ripened mango, preferably with a circular seed rather than oblong.

2. Take a knife and carefully cut around the centre of the mango.

3. Use both hands to twist each end free from the seed.

4. Remove the seed and eat the mango with a spoon like a bowl.

The mango-lover's technique surprised many on social media who were shocked at how simple it was and why they had not thought of it before.

'I've never thought to do this... I'll give it a go next time I buy the fruit,' one person said.

'What a genius idea! I wonder if it works on all different kinds of mangoes?' another woman wrote.

Others said the method was a popular way of cutting a mango in the Caribbean and added that it only worked on very ripe fruit.

'That's how we eat Bombay mangoes in Jamaica. Some people put ice cream or condensed milk in the "mango cup",' they said.

The video has been viewed 6.3million times and retweeted 42,000 times since it was posted.

The clip ads to a long list of theories about slicing and dicing a mango that can be found on the internet.

Gene Downs, from Brisbane, shared a video in 2016 showing how to open a mango using a knife and spoon.

Mr Downs takes the knife and pierces only the skin around the fruit.

He then uses the spoon to dig under the piercing, running it around the cheek of the fruit and peeling off the skin.

While it's a valiant effort, model Rachael Finch uses a wine glass to slice her own.

In the video she posted to Instagram the former Miss Universe Australia cuts the cheeks off the mango and slices it into quarters before inserting it into the edge of the cup and sliding it down.

This way, the flesh of the mango falls into the cup.

'I find this way the best because you're not wasting any of the mango,' she explained.
